The OCC 10 Commandments of Safe Riding
- All riders will sign in before the start of Club rides and check out at the end.
- A proper helmet in good condition is required for all club rides and races.
- Riders must carry a pump, spare tube and tools necessary to change a flat. (See Flat Fund below)
- Equipment must be in good repair and adjusted properly before the ride. (See Flat Fund below)
- Riders must obey all traffic laws.
- On public roads riders are not to cross the center line unless it is required to avoid an accident or dangerous situation.
- Ride to the right of the road whenever possible.
- When in a double pace line the lead riders should split to their side of the pace line when dropping back.
- At intersections each rider is responsible for his/her own "clear" before crossing. Shouting "Clear" is not reliable nor is it recommended.
- We often encounter Amish horses & buggys. Give horses plenty of room. These horses usually wear blinders, so if you are passing from behind, whistling or making some other type of gentle noise will warn the horse that you are approaching.
The other 8 Commandments
- Members must fill out a membership form and pay their dues yearly as posted on OrrvilleCycling.com.
- Members must work the club's Milk Race in August. (Exemptions are given to those out of town on vacation). Racing members must provide a substitute volunteer.
- Members must wear the club jersey when participating in an organized race. This is a USCF rule and a rule in most non-USCF events.
- A leader will be designated for each Club Ride and for each skill group in the ride. The ride leader is responsible for sign-ins before the ride and check-outs at the end.
- The group leader should ensure that someone stays with dropped riders. This is especially true if the dropped rider is new to the club or is a visitor. Experienced members who are dropped may opt to ride it out alone.
- The rider who wants to stay at the front really ought to know the route.
- Littering is not acceptable.
- Members who flat or have mechanical problems will pay a $2 fine to the 'Flat Fund'. At the winter club banquet the 'Flat Fund' will be totalled up and donated to a charitable organization. John Lorson is the keeper of the 'Flat Fund'.
